Newbie Runthrough

Below are a few helpful steps/advice that should help you get started:
UPDATE! There is now a PowerMud Academy, located 'down' and 'north' from PowerMud Pete. Go through that first and get a lot
of free Exp and a few coins!

1) When you start out, you will be in the Newbie Arena, which has lots of easy monsters to kill, free equipment and cash, and free heals/blesses. There is also a trainer in there, so you will not have to leave the Arena to train any skills. It is important that you do not try to fight any monster outside of the Arena when you start out, as you will probably be slain. There is an Arena in each starting city, usually near where you log in.

2) Once in the Arena, type 'say equip me'. This will give you 3 weapons and also a set of leather armor. Type 'wear all' to wear your armor, and then you should 'wield' two of your weapons, as you can have two weapons wielded at one time on here. It is important that you use a weapon that uses a skill that will be allowable in the Guild that you will eventually join. To find out what Guilds use what skill, type 'help guilds' and then do a 'help <guild>' on whatever guild you are aiming for. Note that the three weapons you get from Powermud Pete above use three uniquely different skills : sword = slash, mace = blunt, dagger = pierce.

3) Now type 'say bless me'. Powermud Pete will then cast a bless spell on you, allowing you to hit your targets easier and do more damage to them. Pete can also heal you if you 'say heal me'. Note that you indeed have to 'say' the phrases, and not just type 'bless me' or 'heal me'. When your bless spell wears off, just find Pete again and ask him to bless you once again. For that matter, if you get hurt, find Pete and ask him to heal your wounds (type 'say heal me').

4) Now that you have armor worn and weapons wielded (type 'equip') and are blessed, you are ready to fight. Go north once. Usually there are a bunch of Rats running around in this area. If not, then you will have to roam around and look for something else. However, if the Rats are here, now is the time to show them who is boss. Type 'kill rat'. A combat will now start.

5) Combat is done by rounds, at which time the target tries to hit you, and you try to hit them. If you have two weapons wielded, you will swing at them twice. The same goes for your target. After each round a health meter will be displayed. The meter has your hp's, sp's, and also your target's current condition, so you do not have to look at it to see what condition it is in.

6) Since you should have no problem with the Rat, we will assume that you win the fight. After you kill the Rat, a corpse of the Rat will be on the ground. To get whatever is on that corpse, type 'get all from corpse' and see what you get. Unfortunatley, this Rat is not carrying anything around, so the corpse will be empty. Now you can either 'bury corpse' or just leave it there, as it will eventually decompose. Several of the other monsters in the Arena do carry coins, so be sure to check after you kill them.

7) Now type 'skills'. Your current skills will be displayed, which are probably : perception, slash, blunt, pierce, unarmed. Depending on what weapon(s) you are using, you should have some experience points in that skill (Sword = slash, Mace = blunt, Dagger = pierce). Now go south (or find the center, where Powermud Pete is). Type 'cost'. This will give you a list on how much it will cost you to raise your skills. You will probably not have enough experience in a skill to 'train' it yet, but when you do have enough, type 'train <skill>' and the Trainer will train you in that skill. The higher your skill in those weapons skills will allow you to hit your targets more often.

8) Now go and find other monsters to fight, to raise your skills. Also,< type 'score'. You will notice that you have Experience points in there< also. These experience points are a bit different than skill experience points. These exp points are gained by a few ways : Equal number of exp points per the level of monster slain, certain activities, or certain quests. These experience points are used to determine your title as well as your maximum hp's (hit points). After you reach 500 of these experience points, you may not enter the Arena, as the Arena is only for beginning players.

9) After you reach 500 experience points, it is now probably a good time to find the guild you wish to join and do the mini-quest that is required for enrollment. Finding certain guilds may be quite difficult, but you might explore around and ask other players. Once you find the guild, find the person that allows enrollment in the guild, and then do an 'info'. He/She should then tell you how to join the guild, usually by bringing them a certain object and giving it to them. Once you do this and meet the Guild requirements (You have to be a certain race and have certain Abilities to join a Guild. You should do a 'help <guild>' to see what these are) you will be inducted into the guild. After this, you are no longer considered a newbie, so good luck!
